the Beau & Joe Show.

Posted by jOe

Beau is a close friend of mine who moved to Florida about a year ago.  I miss him and his family, but their move was in obedience to God, and that is above all things, the most important.

I sent Beau a message a little while ago asking him if he'd be a guest blogger. While typing the sentences in that email, I couldn't help but laugh at recalling one of my favorite "Beau-stories."

Here it is. We used to teach RA's together (in case you're not familiar, think Christian boyscouts with a focus on missionaries), and one night for some unknown reason we were both without a planned lesson. A dozen small, hyper boys...and us. Without a plan.

No fear. Enter the "Beau and Joe Show."

Not only did it save the night, but it was a requested for many nights that followed. In short, we created a Beau/Joe-centric Jeopardy with a white board, colored dry erase markers, and more enthusiasm than should be considered sane. But it worked!

When I think back, we weren't trying to trick them; they knew our character, because we were their teachers each week. But by creating this ridiculous game so off the cuff, we were actually spending time with them in a fun and entertaining way.  Houdini once said, "never try to fool children, they expect nothing and therefore see everything." That's only true if you've ever worked with children.

I am excited about what Beau has to say tomorrow, and I know you'll love it, too!

By the way, he's got a blog. All the cool kids are doing it. Bam.

Who is Nikko?

Posted by jOe

Here's a picture I took on my phone.  This book tells me there's stuff to do in Kansas City.  But since the hotel/mall/conference center I'm staying in has a GDP that rivals some third-world countries, I haven't been able to explore these things on my own.

If you could see my blog from behind the curtain as I do, you might begin to understand my excitement from all the new things brewing. In the midst of those new things is a jovial interjection from Nikko.

As a subtile wave of comic relief, Nikko is an alter ego.  I won't reveal yet to whom Nikko belongs, but I will give you a hint: it's not me.

Tomorrow Nikko will be interviewing my Dad and photographer, Alan Fontenot.

My blog: phase 3

Posted by jOe

My blog began in February of 2009 as a way of proving that I was a photographer. But as people got used to seeing me carry my camera everywhere, it quickly became a platform to share the other side of all that. The pictures. It was the natural assumption of my friends and family that if I were at an event, there would be pictures. On my blog.

In that way, I began regarding my blog as a way to share a different perspective with people. It wasn't for me but for them. The goal being to transmit something enjoyable and valuable to everyone who visited my blog. Of course, I knew this was highly improbable. But still, it was my goal.

In that same time I was pictures only. It was a photography blog, not a word blog. What more was there to say!

But as I listened to feedback, and began driving deeper, I began to include different elements. Some that had nothing at all to do with photography. I started to see photography less as the art of picture-taking and more as the art of communicating. With that philosophy en toe, my blog expanded to things that had absolutely nothing to do with pictures (although those were still the main thrust).

Now, I'm entering a new phase. With a philosophy to help and expound, I'm going to be airing, as much as is available, guest writers and bloggers. The motivation here is not to fill up five days a week, but to bring to you a new perspective. However, this is not a free-for-all. The people and writers here are those who exhibit a godly desire to help, whether that be sharing their craft in an educational format, or talking about the Great things happening in their life. Even still, it might simply be in the form of an interview.

What's not to be lost is that this is a further delving into my blog's philosophy to not only provide something entertaining, but useful.

If you haven't picked up on it yet, this has all been leading up to something.

Something: tomorrow I am proud to present the first of I hope many guest posters! My very good friend, Michelle.

Don't miss it!

New Orleans. The city I love.

Posted by jOe

Why? Because it's home, because it's all I know, because I'm too stupid to feel otherwise. Somewhere in there gets me close enough.

The other morning I woke up, tapped my phone alarm, walked into the bathroom, put in my contacts and brushed my teeth. All good. Went to turn on my shower, and I...went to turn on my shower. Uhh. There was a small, silly trickle of water.

I checked other water-things in my house.  Same.  Right.

Plan B: wash face and hair in trickle.  Done.

I called the NO S&WB to see what's up.  Busy signal.

Go figure.

The city I love.

My Portfolio is Up[dated]!

Posted by jOe

For a while my portfolio site has been in, uh, disrepair.  I've focused on my blog and other things while it atrophied.  But no more! It's updated and current. You can click the 'enter site' below in the embedded section to view the entire site from here or click here to see it full size in your browser.

Flash Required to view this area.

If you're wondering what's the point of having a blog and a portfolio website, here's the long and short of it: my blog is for the stuff I do on a daily basis, which is my ramblings, tree portraits, and urban exploring adventures. It's a way for everyone to keep up with what's going on with me.

My portfolio site, on the other hand, is my very best. But more than that, it shows in an organized way the work I do best: portraiture. AKA, the hire-me-here's-what-I-do part of photography.

It's taken many behind the scenes hours to put everything together, so please check it out!

Also, I'm gonna be adding another section in the future to show some of the many projects I've worked with to document.
