El Gato Negro + Coffee Coffee Coffee

Posted by jOe

The other night, my good friend Michelle and I had dinner at El Gato Negro.  If you know me, you know I rarely get in a tizzy over food.  Come to think of, I'm not sure I'd ever own up to be in a "tizzy" at all.  But nevertheless, if I did, it wouldn't be for El Gato Negro.  Nothing wrong with it--the food and service were both good (chips were a little weird), just didn't make the top five percent. After we left, we went to get coffee at enVie on the corner of Barracks and Decatur.  It was very nice.  I had tea.

While we were there, I ask Blossom, the barista, if she would be a part of my ongoing project about coffee baristas around the city, and she did.  Plus, she was really pretty.Blossom:

Crescent Pie & Sausage Company + Morning Call

Posted by jOe

We're pretty sure the guy on the right was in An Education. Aaand he's kind of making a really great face. Plus, you can't see it here, but they were both wearing capris. At one point, I realized I hadn't taken any pictures of my friends I was with, so I did a little machine gun style around the table. Done.I'm thinking of adding this to my Coffee, Coffee, Coffee series of barista-portraits from around the city. Normally, I devote a whole post to this (and it's premeditated), but this was more happenstancial. There. There was kind of a hand-conversation going on...

Casa Garcia + Coffee

Posted by jOe

Saturday night I went to Casa Garcia's with some friends.  After we went to Cafe du Monde and most of us went on to sleep through Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes.  Guy Richie, I'm sad.

IMG_5832IMG_5833IMG_5835IMG_5839IMG_5840This is Sal and Katie.  I realized when I got back home that they were the only ones in my pictures, but then I thought about it and remembered that everyone else was too close to me to focus.

IMG_5842Sal, from Jordan, had never seen a redneck.  So, we were trying to describe one to him.  This guy wasn't really a redneck, but it was, like, 40 degrees outside, and he was wearing a wifebeater.  So... he made the blog.

Elizabeth’s

Posted by jOe

Michelle and I had lunch at Elizabeth's last Friday.  Elizabeth's is a classic Biwater eatery: covered in old, pealing paint; filled with an eccentric staff; and closes the deal with a really, really good burger.  It's on the corner of Chartres & Gallier, open for lunch (and after five for the bar).  Check it out, it's perfect.

Surrey’s & Lucky You

Posted by jOe

First, let me clarify that, by request (Hi, Patricia!), this was not a Man Lunch.  Rather it was a Non-Man Lunch.  Typically when I post about a restaurant it's during Man-Lunch, which, ironically, Denise has been finding her way into a lot lately.  But that's okay!

We went to Surrey's on Magazine Street, which was really cool because it's only about a 30 second drive from my house.  Once we were all five seated at a quaint little two person table, I began to notice the most eclectic mixtures of food.  And I'm not talking about putting mayonnaise on a hamburger (which I do not recommend, by the way); I'm talking about eggs-salmon-cream cheese-and-onions.  That was actually on the menu, and it seemed that everything I looked at was along these lines.  But I don't say that to be a bad thing.  What I found was it was quite the opposite.

After playing around and looking at the menu the waitress reappeared to take our orders.  I was, as usual, not prepared.  But I figure, I'm 25 now, and I've been doing this same thing for too long.  I'm not going to change.  And that's when I instinctively order the first thing I see, which was Shrimp & Grits.  But these shrimp were marinated in barbecue sauce and set in grits and chopped green onions.  It came highly recommend.  So high that was the majority of our table ordered it.  If I had really known how good it was I would have order two!  Aaaand probably wasted a bunch of it.  Oh, did I mention there was bacon.  I'm not too crazy about that.  Allergic, in fact, so I picked that out.  Normally I'm not big on ordering grits because they never fail to be under seasoned (what's this about??), but these grits were in rare form.  They tasted good! As a matter of fact, I would recommend to anyone who doesn't like grits to try these these grits.

They'll change your life, man.

After Surrey's we migrated further down Magazine street to visit Lucky You, in which the store owner promptly said, "so you all do know each other!"

I think that's a sign guys.

There was a lot of candy.  I got an orange Tootsie Pop.
