Vintage Nikon
A few weeks ago I bought a vintage 35mm Nikon FG SLR (for those non-camera-junkies reading this: an SLR is the one with the interchangeable lenses) on eBay for $34. On the digital side I shoot strictly Canon, but a year or so back my Granddad had given me his old Nikon lenses, and I wanted to put them to work.
This being a film camera (and myself being a photographer who learned on digital), I'm learning how much "fun" it is to shoot film. And truthfully, it really is! All of the handicaps I foresaw have become challenges that keep me ever attentive. So far, the biggest issue I've had is not my tendency to look at the back of my camera after every single picture (I didn't realize I did that so much!), or the trance-like concentration I summons when operating the manual focus lenses, but that every time I push the shutter release button nothing happens. What the?!
And then it comes, 'oohhh yeah,' and it dawns on me: I forgot to advance the film.
It happens the same way every time.
Some things I like: the way it only needs a watch battery (which lasts about half of forever, and additionally has an operational mode for when the battery does die). The small and incognitable size. But most of all, its really cool vintage look. I'm a sucker for that.
Today, I'm out shooting the city--film style! And some digital too, because I doubt I'll have this developed by Monday. But either way, something film shots coming this week!
